Taking time for the new album
We’ve been away for a long time, so we’re super happy to release a new single now, and a new album later, which we are still working on.
It’s been good for us to take it easy for a while and we’ve just come back from Canada where we’ve recorded the new album. We spent a lot of time on that as well. So yeah, taking some time off was a good thing for us.
It wasn’t easy for us to create a fresh new sound, because we’ve making music for a while now and we didn’t want to repeat ourselves too much. We’ve been trying to change the sound here and there, but also not so much that it’ll start sounding forced, more like what’ll come naturally and what do we like at this moment. We’ve also been working with a new team of producers and mixers to shake things up a little bit. It is all coming together quite nicely in ‘Bats’ and I am really proud of that. It feels like a step forward and partly that just happens naturally, because changing the sound is never a goal in itself. It’s just what comes out, and what we will do with it, because sometimes we just write songs that are too similar to something we’ve already done. Then we say: we don’t want to do this this way again, because then we are just repeating ourselves. But you also shouldn’t go too far with that.
The fans’ reactions are super important to us. That’s what we’re doing it all for
*Coen and Sander read out a lot of positive reactions from listeners. Comparisons to Queen and Peter Gabriel are mentioned*
That the harmonies remind people of Queen is actually a very nice compliment. We’ve also heard similarities to Peter Gabriel when the song was already finished, but that’s a pretty good comparison as well.
Is ‘Bats’ representative for the rest of the album? I can say that there’s enough on the album that doesn’t sound like this at all, but also a couple of things that do, so it is going in different directions. Something for everyone, so to say!
This is our fifth record, so time for us to evolve, but still maintain our own sound too. This happened almost automatically and the result of that is ‘Bats’.
We went to Canada to record our new album and looked back at what we have done up to now and what we wanted to change. I think we did a good job with that.
The album is not completely finished yet, and we’re working hard on that, but I expect it will come out later this year.
We’re looking forward to the Ziggo Dome shows in December. It’s not likely that we will add other Ziggo Dome dates and we haven’t planned any other shows this year, besides the show with Bon Jovi, but we will be back for a lot of shows in 2020. And instead of more Ziggo Dome shows we might do something else completely. Smaller venues? Maybe, or maybe even some bigger ones.
Taking time off
It’s been good for us to have a longer period of rest, because we’ve been ‘on the road’ continually for almost ten years. We’ve been able to let everything that has happened to us these last years sink in a little bit and to focus on our private lives too. I’ve been renovating my home. This seemed important and it has helped us to make a fresh start again and to keep going strong. I’ve missed playing live a lot.
Taking time for the new album
It takes time to create good music and we’ve been playing a lot of shows, in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe. Preparing for those Ziggo Dome shows and the Arena show is time-consuming as well. We were a little tired as well, so we just allowed ourselves some more time for writing and recording this new album.
We are still working on finishing the new album. Nobody knows what that’s going to be like when it’s finished, not even us. ‘Bats’ shouldn’t be considered as a test case to gauge the fans’ reactions for it though, because we’ve got all the songs, we know what is going to be on the album, but it’s just not finished yet. We just thought that it was the right song to release right now, and that is was time for us to bring out something new. Which we haven’t done since 2016.
What happened to all the reverb? We ran out of that. Just kidding. We made a conscious choice to change that a little bit, not because we didn’t like our old sound anymore, but because you want to keep evolving as an artist. It’s not that big of a difference I think, but of course the sound is also influenced by the people we have worked with. Altogether that makes it sound a little fresher maybe.
